Boa Vista

The apple-shaped isle of Boa vista. Dubbed the ‘island of dunes’, the coastline here is a halo of Bounty-like bone-white sands. And they’re pretty much empty to boot. A place of eye-popping contrasts, you’re just as likely to come across a postbox-red house here as you are a snow-white slice of sand.

But if you take the time to explore Boa vista’s dramatic interior, you’ll also discover a to-die-for landscape dominated by shape-shifting dunes, mighty peaks and sub-tropical coconut plantations.

Little development and a low key nightlife mainly found within the hotels making this the perfect destination for beach lovers and those wishing to relax and unwind. The 55km of glorious white sand beaches are some of the best in the world where visitors can enjoy long uninterrupted walks along the coastline.

Dazzling beaches, rich marine life and mysterious dunes make this island a popular choice. Boa Vista is a divers paradise with many wrecks to explore as well as being an excellent centre for windsurfing and fishing. The beaches here will take your breath away as they stretch as far as the eye can see and if you are lucky you may see turtles nesting. The island is perfect for relaxing on the white sandy beaches and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere, as apart from water sports there is little else to do.

Boa Vista boasts Cape Verde’s longest beach; 18 kilometres of deserted pure white sand and turquoise waters. It is ideal for diving, fishing, windsurfing and kite boarding, and completely away from the stresses of everyday life.

Sal Rei, the capital, has a pretty central square, with small restaurants, shops and bars, and serves some of the best lobster in the world. The town has 3 beaches, Cabral beach where houses and apartments are being built, Estoril beach to the south with a lovely beach bar and windsurfing centre, and Praia Diante, next to the small harbour.

South of the island is the stunning Santa Monica Beach, with miles of endless white sand, and to the west of the island is the beautiful Chaves beach, with a new luxury hotel development and a few other smaller hotels.
