The weather in Cape Verde

Located in the Sahel zone, Cape Verde is a marine extension of the Sahara.

Idyllic year round temperatures in the high twenties and virtually no rain makes the Islands the ideal getaway whatever the time of year. Their privileged position in the Atlantic means they enjoy fairly constant cooling breezes which keep the atmosphere almost free from humidity. Rainfall is minimal throughout the year and is most likely to occur during the months of July and October.

It is altogether a gentler climate than in neighbouring countries located on the same latitude. This is partly due to the northeast wind from December to April, the hot winds from the Sahara, and the Monsoons.

The winter months in particular make these island a windsurf and kitesurf paradise.

January's midday temperature is 27 ° C and 20 ° C at night. It rises until September when it is 31° C at midday, 24° C at night, and temperatures then fall back until December.

If you visit in winter you may need a sweater - especially at higher altitudes - although average daily minimums never fall far below 20°C (68°F). Things do get a little stickier in the southern islands (especially Fogo) during summer.

There is a rainy season that occurs in the middle of August and continues through until the middle to end of October. This rainy season, however, should not affect holidays to Cape Verde as weeks can go by during this period that not a drop of rain falls from the sky.

The peak season for holidays to Cape Verde is generally agreed to be June until the middle of September. However, many seasoned tourists of Cape Verde like to be present for the Carnival festivities that take place throughout the islands during the months of February and March.
